Mental Health Clinic
Description: Programs include crisis intervention; individual, group, family therapy and play therapy and other treatment modalities; consultation to family physicians and other agencies and service providers. Individuals may be seen for short-term or long-term treatment and follow-up.

Community Based Services for Children with Special Needs
Description: CBSCSN offers services to families who are unable to provide all the care and support required to meet the special developmental needs of their severely disabled child. An individual Service Plan is developed to determine the child's strengths, needs, and the services required. Depending on the child's needs, services or items such as respite care, attendant care, medical and rehabilitation transportation, recreational opportunities and home support services may be covered. If the child is not covered by private health insurance, a health card may be issued to cover items such as prescription drugs, dental care, optical care, medical and rehabilitation equipment, and supplies related to their specific special needs. Residential resources (foster homes and group homes) are available to children whose needs are greater than what can be met by their families.
Getting the Service: This is a voluntary program, so families must demonstrate that in addition to the other community services they are accessing, their child still has some unmet needs. This program is not insured by Medicare, so families must be prepared to contribute financially, where possible, to the additional services offered. The child must be under the age of 19, and the child and their family/guardians must by residents of N.B. with valid Medicare cards.
Respite Services
Description: Relief and companionship to families of children with developmental special needs who are under 21 years of age. The child is matched with a screened volunteer care provider. Care is provided either in the child's home or in the home of the individual providing the respite.

Speech Therapy
Description: A speech-language pathologist has training to assist with problems in feeding and swallowing (dysphagia), reading and written language, etc. Then there are voice disorders, resonance problems, dysfluency, motor speech disorders (apraxia and dysarthria), language learning disabilities, language delays, language disorders, phonological disorders, and articulation.
Getting the Service: In most regions, hospitals cover preschool and adult services and Extra-Mural covers service to all school age children. A referral from a doctor or a speech language pathologist is required for hospital services, while Extra-Mural referrals are open; parents may refer their children in the school system. (If a child has had service in one centre and is moving to another service area, ensure that you sign consent forms for reports to be released to the new service provider. This will ensure continuity in care. Contact the speech-language pathology department or resource teacher at school for specific referral procedures. These services are provided by Medicare. Some private medical insurance plans may cover some SLP services. For information on registered speech-language pathologists in your area, contact the New Brunswick Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NBASLPA/AOAN-B) at 858-1788 or 1-877-751-5511, or e-mail the association at nbaslpa@nb.aibn.com .
