The Field Trip Club is a once a month outing for children who have a brother or sister with a serious disability. It is sponsored by Autism Society New Brunswick, but not limited to families with autism.
The purpose of the field trip is to give our children an enriched educational experience, to broaden their world beyond the scope of school and home. The purpose of the group is to ensure that our children's circle of friends includes others who understand what it can be like to have a brother or sister who needs special care and attention.
Most of the children are elementary school age, and the activities are geared to that level. Activities have been conducted in English until now. As the composition of the group expands and changes, we will make changes as needed. Previous months have included trips to the police station, the airport, a bakery, the Nutcracker, and a television station. Future field trips planned include visits to the maple sugar woods, the hospital, newspaper, dairy farm, and a honey bee apiary. Family fun days will be planned for the summer which include the sibling with special needs, but these field trips are only for the "typical" siblings. Children are welcome to bring a best friend along, and parents are invited to supervise if they wish.
