~ ASD is an umbrella term under which autism, Asperger's Syndrome and other disorders are grouped. There are many treatments and services to explore when seeking help for an individual with autism; some are more valid than others. In New Brunswick, services offered may include speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, early intervention, respite care, and support worker/services. The school system is integrated, and a teacher's aide may be provided if needed. Medical treatment is geared toward treating the symptoms and co-existing conditions. There is a great deal of variation between individuals, both in symptoms and in response to medication. Complementary medicine, holistic approaches, and treatments based on very preliminary research have been helpful in many cases, but take things slowly and keep your doctor informed. Specific teaching techniques, such as Applied Behavioural Analysis, are useful to bridge the different learning style of individuals with autism. Research indicates that if this is started early enough, and done intensively enough, some children will be able to function at an age appropriate level, indistinguishable from their peers. Check out ASNB's resources for topics to search the internet, or contact ASNB for information. Remember to check the source when you're "surfing the net" and check with your doctor before implementing any treatment. Your local autism society can help you find what's available in your area.
